2023 and 2024 milk production set to dip

Explore the nuanced dynamics of the dairy market, examining the projected shifts in milk production, imports, exports, and pricing for 2023 and 2024. With the dairy landscape in flux, leveraging Hedgify's insights into these numerical trends can provide a distinct competitive advantage.

  • Recent data from the July 1 dairy cow inventory has hinted at a reduction in cow numbers, impacting overall milk production in the coming years.

  • The changing consumption patterns, imports for cheese and butter are expected to decline for 2023, signaling potential shifts in dairy preferences.

  • With declining sales of popular dairy products like cheese, butter, and whey, exports for 2023 are set to see a noticeable decrease. This indicates an evolving global demand scenario for U.S. dairy products.

  • The projected price per cwt of milk is $19.95 for 2023, up due to a mix of factors like butter and cheese price adjustments. The forecast for 2024, however, stands at $19.35 per cwt.

The milk production forecasts for both 2023 and 2024 have been adjusted downwards. This comes in the wake of new data suggesting lower cow inventory for both years. While the output per cow sees a reduction for 2023, projections remain steady for 2024.

For 2023, we're anticipating a dip in the imports of fat and skim-solids bases, attributed to weaker imports of cheese and butter. Exports are also projected to decrease due to declining sales of cheese, butter, butterfat products, whole milk powder, and whey products. This trend is also anticipated to continue into 2024 with subdued imports and exports in key dairy categories.

Recent market movements lead to higher butter and cheese price forecasts for 2023. However, global demand for whey remains sluggish, driving its price forecast down. NDM prices for 2023 see a slight upward tick. As we venture into 2024, the bullish sentiment around butter and cheese prices persists, while whey takes a downward trajectory.

In 2023, the Class III price increases, driven by surging cheese prices which overshadow the dip in whey prices. The Class IV price climbs, reflecting the uptrend in butter and NDM prices. As a result, the all milk price for 2023 is projected at $19.95 per cwt. For 2024, while the Class III price is influenced by stronger cheese prices, the Class IV price takes its cue from rising butter prices, pushing the all milk price to $19.35 per cwt.

With the dairy market displaying nuanced shifts across production, trade, and pricing, staying informed is crucial for strategic decision-making.
